Re

" -integration and use of R in Manifold"

It would be better if what can be done using R for, was done enitirely within Manifold without resorting to a third party application. I urge you to use your knowledge of R and statistical analysis to put forward suggestions for what is required and how to achieve it. Afterall, there is not a vast amount of difference between producing plots and analysing information in data space than producing drawings/maps and analysing data in geographic space.

Hi Nick I totally agree with you regarding manifold to embend some stat analysis and some more chart capabilities. Maybe this fruit is hanging too high in the tree for Manifold ..as Dimitri would say.. so one still has to help himself with other products for the time beeing to do a simple correlation analysis of some attributes..

Well, statistical measures are usually very simple arithmetic, but they do have to compete with any other desires the user community expresses.

As always, the way to get your way is to carefully read the web page giving tips for suggestions and advocacy and then send in a well-crafted, razor-sharp suggestion for what you would like to see done.

However, a debate on new statistical measures desired does not belong in this thread and should get started in a new thread. Let me suggest also, to maximise the content in that thread, that folks refrain from postings only of the form "oh sure, I already sent in a suggestion for more statistics" and instead please include the full text of the suggestion you have sent in.

If we do that we will all see two things: a) there have been very few detailed suggestions requesting specific statistics measures and frankly, darned few superficial ones either, and b) of the very few detailed suggestions related to new statistics functions desired there is not much commonality. That would lead to a good debate.

One thing that I am quite sure about is that each Manifold user has a thing or two that they wish was included in Manifold natively. As Dimitri reminds us, when it will show up in Manifold is up to us individually.

In the mean time, would anyone care to make a presentation at the conference? I for one am quite certain that I am missing the boat (I am probably missing it so completely that it could be an ocean liner for all I know) on this topic. I would very much like to be enlightened. Please drop a note to information (at) gis4everyone (dot) com and let us know what time slot you would like :-)

Good news -- The conference presentations are filling up fast. We'll be updating the schedule in the next week or so to show the changes, but be sure to keep checking www.gis4everyone.com/WUSMUC for more details.

Wanted to say a special thanks to Art Lembo for offering one of his new GisAdvisor training videos as a door prize. Just one more good reason to join us in Phoenix in January! As if these ice storms rolling across the US aren't enough of an incentive.

Best regards,

John

Have you tried inviting James Fee (of spatiallyadjusted.com fame) to the conference, if I am not mistaken he is living and working round Phoenix?

That would be interesting. I've only visited his blog a few times. Do you think he'd be interested?

Well doesnt hurt to shoot out an invitation. He had a copy of Manifold about a year ago, but I guess he never got round to evaluating it properly? It would be interesting (for both sides) if he attends I guess?

Me thinks it would require a conversion of biblical proportions for James Fee to attend

More good news!

Dimitri is going to join us for the entire day on Friday January 18th and will be presenting one or possibly two topics. Those willing to sign an NDA will be treated to a peek at Manifold's roadmap for future developments. Should make for plenty of great discussion and feedback.

Still time to sign up. As Danielle indicated above, check out the Conference Website for more details.

Hope to see you next week!

John

John,

how many people do you have attending so far?

Hi Art,

I'm not at my work computer at the moment as I've been out of town all day, but at last count I believe we were at around 20. It's never too late to sign up of course.

From I hear, the page views on the website have climbed significantly in the last week, so we're expecting a few more by conference time. Wish you could have made it out. We had a bit of a short time frame for this one, but we'll have a whole year to get the next one going!

With Dimitri's presentation we have filled almost every available slot. Based on conversations so far and from what I've seen in our attendee survey, we've got a good mix of industries and uses represented, so we certainly won't be at a lack of conversation topics.

All the best,

John

p.s. 3 to 5 inches of snow expected tonight here in beautiful Port Washington, WI (webcam here) after our 2nd snowiest December on record. -- can't wait for next week!

Anyone else having trouble with the conference survey link? The yes/no and multiple choice questions have no input option for me. I presume radio buttons should appear for those. The text boxes work OK.

If you are experiencing any trouble please drop an email to information (at) gis4everyone (dot) com. We would hate to miss anyone because of a technical problem. The form is also working for me but that is of no consequence. What is important is that we get you registered if you would like to be and I will see to it that we do sans form.

Hi Jerry,

Gotta love security -- According to the SurveyMonkey website, it may be a firewall issue.

http://surveymonkey.com/HelpCenter/Answer.aspx?HelpID=363&q=no%20buttons explains it better than I, but it looks like some of their styles, scripts and images all come from slightly different subdomains.

Sorry for the issue - if you'd like, send me an email at jnorman[at]taureangroup[dot]com with any questions or comments. I don't know how it would help, but I could send you a .pdf version of the survey that you could print and fax to me.

Best regards,

John

Yes, this appears to be the problem for me. Doubt its a browser issue, since I have the same result in IE and Firefox. I'll email you. Thanks.
